A Sinister Detail in the Use of the Word Fascism

HISTORY DOES NOT SAVE US The accusation of "fascist" has become commonplace. With or without reason? This essay shifts the question that has generated controversies and rhetorical confrontations.

It does not discuss whether it is accurate or abusive to use the word today; it asks what emotion drives those who utter it to hurl it at an opponent. And it discovers, in contemporary anti-fascist reflection, a sinister detail that the enunciator himself does not perceive. Invoking the famous poem attributed to Brecht (which was actually by Niemöller), it shows how history, when invoked as prophecy, ceases to think.

Perhaps history does not save us, and the automatism of its evocation ultimately conceals something sinister. An uncomfortable essay for a necessary debate.
