Cousin Basílio is one of the most emblematic works by the Portuguese realist writer Eça de Queirós.
Published in 1878, the novel is a faithful portrait of Portuguese society at the time, with an emphasis on the hypocrisy of the bourgeois class. The work depicts the story of Jorge and Luísa, a couple belonging to the 19th-century Portuguese bourgeoisie. The plot takes place in Lisbon. Jorge, Luísa's husband, travels for work when she receives a visit from her cousin Basílio. At this point, having had a previous relationship, they end up consummating their latent desire.
