Mandarin

Teodoro lives a modest life devoid of ambition until the day he is confronted with an unusual proposal: to ring a doorbell to kill a wealthy mandarin. If he does, he inherits his entire fortune.
Tempted by the Devil, the scribe succumbs to greed. However, his conscience does not remain silent after the act: with time, it settles in and becomes impossible to ignore. Driven by anguish, Teodoro decides to go to the Orient to distribute his wealth in an attempt at redemption.

First published in serial form in 1880, The Mandarin is one of Eça de Queirós' most unique and unsettling texts. A biting moral fable about temptation and human conscience, it inaugurates the "Classics to Read in One Night" collection, a selection of fundamental short works of Portuguese literature, designed to be read in one night and to remain long after.
