Raised in a conservative and emotionally unstable Palestinian family in Brooklyn, Yara thought she would finally feel free when she married a charming businessman who took her to an affluent area outside the city. She had the opportunity to pursue her dreams, graduating in Art and getting a job at the local college. As a traditional wife, she raises her two school-aged daughters, takes care of the house, and has dinner ready when her husband arrives. She knows her life is infinitely more fulfilling than her own mother's. So why doesn't it feel like enough?

However, even her carefully constructed world will begin to implode. After seeing her desire to accompany students on a trip to Europe evaporate and responding to a colleague's racist provocation, Yara is then put on probation at work and forced to attend mandatory counseling to keep her job. Her mother blames a family curse for the problems Yara now faces, and although she doesn't believe in superstitions, she begins to understand that to save herself, she needs to accept that the childhood difficulties she thought forgotten have real implications for her future, and also for that of her daughters.
