Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and already considered a modern classic, Michael Cunningham's The Hours is a deeply moving novel about time, identity, and the silent weight of inner lives.
Over a single day spanning three distinct eras, we follow the lives of three women connected by desire, solitude, and artistic creation. In 1923, Virginia Woolf is working on Mrs Dalloway, while grappling with the fragility of her mind and the world around her. In 1950, Laura Brown lives in a seemingly perfect Los Angeles suburb, where domestic routine begins to feel suffocating and unbearable. In the present day, Clarissa Vaughan prepares a party in New York for a dear friend, confronting memory, loss, and the future.
With elegant and hypnotic writing, Michael Cunningham builds a web of intertwining stories, exploring love, the act of artistic creation, and the silent resilience of everyday life in the face of despair.
The Hours is a subtle and brilliant tribute to Virginia Woolf and the transformative power of literature. An intense, intimate, and unforgettable novel.
