Literary Quality and Reading Experience:
-
High-Intensity Narrative: The extraordinary impetus given to scientific dissemination in the 19th century was due to factors such as new printing and paper production technologies, the expansion of school networks, and initiatives by publishers and booksellers aimed at attracting new audiences. Added to these was the generalization of a utilitarian view of knowledge, in order to foster the economic development of each country. It is in this context that collections consisting of scientific dissemination pamphlets, no more than 64 pages long and at affordable prices – that is, intended for a wide audience – dedicated to themes of history, economics, agronomy, zoology, biology, chemistry, physics, linguistics, arts, and, of course, mathematics, emerged in cities like London, Milan, and Lisbon.
In Portugal, the collection would be called Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas – inspired by its Italian counterpart – and 237 issues would be published between 1881 and 1913, with print runs that, for some topics, reached 20,000 copies. Of the issues published, ten were dedicated to mathematics. In an initiative by the Portuguese Mathematical Society, these ten fascicles are compiled, in their facsimile version, on the bpe.spm.pt website. This book brings together a study of the complete collection and three chapters dedicated to three of the fascicles on mathematics: Arithmetica Pratica, Trigonometria, and Noções sobre cálculo das probabilidades, theoria dos erros e methodo dos mínimos quadrados. This is a way to introduce new readers to the pioneering event that was the Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas and to contribute to the study of the history of scientific dissemination in Portugal. - Edition of Excellence: Published by Imprensa da Universidade de Lisboa, ensuring a quality finish and a fluid reading experience from the first to the last page.
